Psychedelic Warriors (Hawkwind) - White Zone

From Prog Archives.com:
"In the 1990s Hawkwind developed an interest in ambient music, but their first CD experimenting with this kind of music, It Is the Business of the Future to be Dangerous, did not get favorable reactions from their fans, so they decided to produce their next effort in this direction under the name Psychedelic Warriors. The line-up of the band on their only album is basically the same as on the previous album of Hawkwind, with the addition of Dave Charles."

Michael Moorcock and The Deep Fix - "The New World's Fair"

Besides Moorcock himself on guitar and vocals, The Deep Fix featured Hawkwind and Pink Floyd tour and session alumni including Nik Turner, Dave Brock, Simon House, Snowy White, Graham Charnock, Alan Powell and Simon King. Part concept album, part allegorical sci-fi narrative of an eerie English seaside fair that spins on in the midst of its post-apocalyptic surroundings, The New World's Fair is a rare and fascinating glimpse into Moorcock's musical vision, amplified through his association with like-minded spacerock luminaries from Hawkwind.
"Michael John Moorcock (born December 18, 1939) is a prolific British writer primarily of science fiction and science fantasy who has also published a number of literary novels. Moorcock's most popular works by far have been the Elric novels, starring the character Elric of Melniboné, an anti-hero written as a deliberate reversal of what Moorcock saw as cliches commonly found in fantasy adventure novels inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and a direct antithesis of Robert E. Howard's Conan." -- Wikipedia

"I have to hold up my hands and admit to being very much a fan of Michael Moorcock's work, but even allowing for my rose-tinted glasses, I think I can safely say that [The New World's Fair] is truly a great album. I still play it regularly, more than twenty years after its release and, enjoy it as much as ever." -- Brian Tawn, from Dude's Dreams: The Music of Michael Moorcock [via Terminal Café]

Saga - All The Best 1978-1993

Like fellow Torontoans Rush, Canadian progressive rock band Saga has had an amazingly long and prolific career that peaked commercially in the 1980's; but unlike Geddy, Neil, and Alex, Saga achieved far greater reknown across Europe than they they ever did in North America.

Nonetheless, Saga has toured and regularly put out over two dozen full-length albums over the past three decades, and in 2006, Saga released their latest, Trust on the Inside/Out label. Their expansive hard rock style fronted by singer Michael Sadler's powerful tenor bring to mind bands like Styx, Queen, Triumph, Marillion, and Asia, with a distinctive Canadian-European accent (Sadler is a native of Wales). This out-of-print 1993 collection is only one of several Saga "best-of's," but it brings together fifteen of the group's best known tracks, including several that are missing from currently available discs. I think it's an exceptional introduction to their "heyday" catalogue, with tracks like "Scratching the Surface," "On The Loose," "Wind Him Up," "What Do I Know," and "The Flyer."
"Casual recognition in their own country but superstar status in Europe is the story of Saga. Formed from the core of Fludd, bassist Jim Chricton, Peter Rachon on keyboards and drummer Steve Negus recruited Chricton's younger brother Ian on guitars. Pockets was born.

The group toured the local Toronto area doing bars for a few months until singer Michael Sadler left a local group called Truck to become their frontman. His vocal stylings blended with their progressive yet eclectic sound. It wasn't long before the group was noticed by Maze Records and signed to a deal shortly thereafter. Recorded by Paul Gross at Toronto's Phase One Studios, their self-titled debut was released in '78 and was instantly met with rave reviews for their tight, sophisticated approach." -- Canadian Bands.com

The Box - The Box (1st)/All The Time, All The Time, All The Time

This 1985 2-in-1 disc set from Montréal's The Box is a rare double treat, compiling the group's eponymous first album and its equally strong follow-up disc All The Time, All The Time, All The Time.

Founded in 1982 by Jean-Marc Pisapia (briefly a member of Men Without Hats) with Luc Papineau, Guy Pisapia (keyboards), Jean-Pierre Brie (bass) and Guy Florent (guitar), The Box were major players on Canada's New Wave scene, charting numerous hits on classic rock and alternative (then "modern rock") radio, including "Live on TV," "My Dreams of You," "Walk Away," "Must I Always Remember," and the bilingual murder mystery (!) "L'Affaire Dumoutier (Say To Me)."

The band officially went on hiatus after the release of 1990's The Pleasure and the Pain, and sadly, they remained an obscurity outside their native country. A greatest hits collection, Always in Touch With You: The Best of the Box was released in 2003, and the group released a 2005 comeback CD, Black Dog There (streaming samples of tracks available here on the band's official site).

"L'Affaire Dumoutier (Say To Me)" - whose lyrics read like a surreal Quebecois Law and Order episode set to music - is still a Montréal rock radio cult classic:
On the 14th of October
Very early in the morning
The results of a crime were found
In the stables of 'Le Père Choupon'

The old man had discovered
To his absolute dismay
The dislocated body of Elizabeth Dumoutier
...
Walking, walking, on the tightrope of insanity
Walking, walking, on the verge of losing mind...

Say...say to me...please say that this can't be...

Hawkwind - Palace Springs (Live 1991)

The intriguing Palace Springs captures the essence of Hawkwind's science-fiction leanings with thundering jams (and judicious use of "negative space"), spacy violin work from Simon House, and delightful turns at the mic by guest vocalist Bridgett Wishart.

Highlights include the album-exclusive dystopian epic "Treadmill," and the spooky live rendition of "Back in the Box."
"Coming from a band with seemingly a million albums under their belt, this is really one of their best live discs. It captures a great, if quite short, period of the band and does so with a style and texture that really is incredible."
-- Gary Hill, Music Street Journal

"Band leader Dave Brock was taking Hawkwind into the 1990's with a new sound that would see a greater emphasis on the techno/electronica sound mixed with metal overtones. ... Simon House, the boomeranging violinist, seems always to have a positive effect on the band's sound, making it smooth and dreamy."

Mary My Hope - Museum

Taking cues from both classic rock (The Doors and Pink Floyd, for example) and late 1980's alternative college radio, Mary My Hope released their sole album Museum (now out of print) approaching twenty years ago, but its virile, complex style has aged remarkably well.

Standout tracks include "Suicide King," "Communion," and "I'm Not Singing."
"The Atlanta, GA, band Mary My Hope appeared a little too early, carving layers of post-punk and hard rock a few years before the Smashing Pumpkins would turn similar ingredients into multi-platinum sales.

Founded by James Hall (vocalist) in the mid-'80s with guitarist Clinton Steele, bassist Sven Pipien, and drummer Steve Gorman, Mary My Hope were minor-league players in the college-radio world, several ranks below all-stars like Love and Rockets and Peter Murphy but above the gone and forgotten such as Fatal Flowers and the Sandmen.

Those familiar with late-'80s campus station sounds can easily imagine what Mary My Hope sounded like, traces of goth rock borrowed from the Mission and the Sisters of Mercy, the folksy moodiness of R.E.M., and the psychedelic metal of the Cult. Adored in their hometown, Mary My Hope weren't quite as popular nationally. The group released its first and only LP, Museum, in 1989." -- mp3.com
